Brawl 64 Development

I’ve decided to also use this blog for my mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Brawl 64.

Basically a remake of Smash 64, with updated graphics, larger character roster, more stages, etc.

I plan on, far down the road, also balancing items and final smashes, though this won’t be done until the very end.

Right now I am working on shields. Just standing still, in your shield, in Brawl your shield breaks in roughly a second. In 64, it breaks in 900 frames exactly, or 15 seconds. This might seem simple, but then 64 had a different rate at which shields recovered as well, and I have no idea how to find this value aside from learning how the game is programmed, and locating the constant for it.

Much work is ahead of me. I think the next thing I’ll do is remove side specials, should be a fairly simple task.

Soul of Rebirth Development Begins

As of today, development on Soul of Rebirth has resumed. Sort of.

What do I mean sort of? No actual programming will be done for a few months. I will be getting designs on paper, everything planned out. This is because I have decided that Soul of Rebirth will be a Turn-Based Competitive Strategy RPG for the 3DS.

Obviously, I will have to wait until the 3DS has been released, never mind cracked, until this can even begin.

To start with, I’ve been working on Experience formulas. I have one that took me about an hour and a half to come up with. The level cap is 50.

The formula is…


All roots and division are rounded down immediately as they happen.

This is the basic formula. In particular, it’s designed to not immediately look formulaic when the actual values are looked at. Throw it in Excel (fix the squareroot to root, add in the ROUNDDOWN statements) to see, I don’t feel the need to post the values.

I’m currently working on a formula that initially requires higher experience, but around level 30 or so starts to require less.

Change of Pace

What with me deciding against proceeding with Soul of Rebirth, I’ve decided that perhaps I’ll take this blog in a different direction. Again, I’ll apologize for these posts always showing up on the DC front page, nothing I can do about that.

I’m actually considering blogging about music. Not just any kind of music, mind you, anyone can do that. I’m more thinking of the highly under-appreciated realm of video game music, in particular arranged albums and cover bands.

In other news, or rather lack thereof, I still have nothing done of Shining in the Darkness. I’m still going to do it, but right now school is more important.

Anyways, not much else to say, expect my opinion on the album Bomber Blue/Gallant Green by a small cover band called Rare Candy.


Not going to do Soul of Rebirth

I hate to say this. I mean, I’ve been planning out Soul of Rebirth for about 4 or 5 years now. For perspective, in that time I’ve started high school, switched high schools, gone from being completely unable to approach people to being able to do so, etc. Basically, in the time I’ve been planning it, I’ve changed drastically as a person. I just don’t have the time or the resources to complete it. So over the next year or so, I’ll be posting information about it, to give people an idea of what could have been.

I still have no laptop. That means no work on Shining in the Darkness. I will eventually get on it, but I’m considering waiting for the release of the 3DS.

In other news, I am working on a ROM hack of Oracle of Ages. I have many original ways to use the items in the game, and am currently waiting on Lin to finish ZOSE. For more information on ZOLE, ZOSE, etc, go to It has some really annoying ads, but w/e, could be worse. Annoying thing is I actually haven’t played through a Zelda game in a few years, never mind OoA, so if I’m reusing a puzzle from a game by accident, too bad, deal.

Update on the Shining in the Darkness Remake… sort of

I’ve done nothing whatsoever.

I haven’t even beat the original yet. I’m procrastinating hugely on this. Mostly because I don’t have any motivation whatsoever to do it, or a laptop to do it on. Partly because of the annoying lack of automap on the original.

Also, it seems all of my posts get put on the front page. I’m not going to make any effort to right the situation and don’t particularly care if my posts seem frivolous.

I do however have a hankering to continue my old Ocarina of Time 2D project, as I found the old files. I’m not making any promises whatsoever, mostly because I’m annoyed right now looking at the number 40 next to how many spam comments this place has gotten.

Where in the World is Supreme Dirt?

Been a while. A very loooooooooooooong while. I’ve been mostly busy trying to find a job, get something done this summer, not much came of it.

Still don’t have a new laptop. Kind of annoying, but whatever.

Anyways, school’s coming back up again, I’ve opted to return to high school. Which means much internet access. Except I’ll be aiming for 90s, so I might still be a little inactive.

Additional sucess

We now have an Alpha of our game. It’s pretty bootleg right now, but its not terrible. Gameplay actually exists, for example. Unfortunately, many things don’t, and there are lots of features (read Bugs). It’s called Dragon Quest Bootleg Joker, and you can download the Alpha soon.

Dungeon Crawl Update

Finally, after much difficulty, we finally suceeded. Saving was no match for us! Incredibly bootleggy, but still. We can now create characters and save them. More updates to follow. Oh, and you can move on an empty grid. Yay!

Final Midi Success – and subsequent problems

Finally found someone with Sibelius registered to make the midi. You can listen to it here:  Main Theme.

Now, to the problem. I have to make a massive program plan for the dungeon crawl in an hour. I have to explain how I’m going to code everything. How am I supposed to do that? I’m supposed to analyse problems I haven’t encountered yet and how to solve them! How do I do that?

Dungeon Crawl Main Theme

I wrote a main theme for the dungeon crawl. Unfortunately, it turns out that Noteworthy Composer 2, when not paid for, cannot save as a midi. This is very annoying, since my sibelius trial had the same problem. I’m now looking for a program that can acutally save midis. It’s not looking good, but at least I can save the song.

Recently, I’ve also encountered other problems. Renoise, Anvil Studio, Midi Converter, and DX 8.1 Music Producer, all freeware or shareware versions that could actually create and save midi’s, cannot be used on the computer I’m currently on, thus making it even more difficult for me to make my song.
